HealthSherpa allows agents to shop for plans, complete subsidy applications, and submit enrollments directly within their HealthSherpa account.
In this article we'll cover:
HealthSherpa at a glance
HealthSherpa is an enrollment platform built for agents. HealthSherpa integrates with the Marketplace using Enhanced Direct Enrollment (EDE), a secure technology approved by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). That means agents can complete enrollment activity right in HealthSherpa, and data stays in sync with the Marketplace automatically.
Licensed agents can create a free HealthSherpa account at any time and can choose from multiple account types.
Where to start
Agents start by creating a HealthSherpa account. After account creation, the Home page is the default landing page when logging into HealthSherpa.
Beginning each day from the Home page allows agents to:
Review an onboarding checklist to confirm account setup steps are complete
Find important notifications and outreach suggestions
See a summary of follow-up items that need attention
Navigate to agent resources
How to shop & how to apply
Plan shopping and the subsidy application are distinct steps that lead to an enrollment submission. Agents can begin with shopping and quoting or with applying for a subsidy, whichever is preferred.
To begin with plan shopping and quoting, use the Quote button. This allows agents to review available plans and prices before completing an application.
To begin with the subsidy application, use the Start application or Search Marketplace features. Agents can search for an existing application, claim it into their account, make updates, or start a new application when needed.
Using the help center
The help center contains articles on HealthSherpa features and workflows, along with articles on the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and Marketplace topics more broadly. HealthSherpa updates these articles throughout the year as Marketplace policies and platform features change.
Articles are organized into collections by subject, and agents can also search by topic or feature name.
To open the help center, go to the Agent resources section of the Home page or select the Help icon within the HealthSherpa account.
Agent training
HealthSherpa hosts agent training sessions covering the HealthSherpa account as well as a range of focused topics. Webinars typically include live platform demonstrations and Q&A discussion, and many are offered on several dates.
Every agent who registers receives a copy of the recording, so agents who cannot attend a live session can still review the material.
HealthSherpa recommends starting with HealthSherpa 101, a foundational session for agents who are new to the platform. Training topics change from season to season, so review agent training to browse current topics, register for an upcoming session, or watch past recordings.
Frequently asked questions
How is HealthSherpa free to use?
Insurance carriers pay HealthSherpa a fee. This model allows HealthSherpa to provide agents and consumers with access to powerful enrollment and plan management tools at no cost.
How does HealthSherpa make money?
HealthSherpa generates revenue through carrier partnerships. Agents and consumers are never charged for access to the platform.
HealthSherpa’s carrier partnerships do not impact commissions agents earn from carriers, as these are separate items.
Does using HealthSherpa affect commissions or the upline agency relationship?
Using HealthSherpa does not change how commissions flow, which carriers an agent is contracted with, or an agent's relationship with an upline agency. Existing contracts and commission arrangements remain in place.
What happens to an agent's existing consumers?
Nothing changes for an agent's existing consumers. Agents simply begin working in the HealthSherpa account.
How does an agent get their book of business into HealthSherpa?
Agents can import an existing book of business or use search & claim to locate individual consumer records. Agents with a large book of business can also contact the Agent Success team for support with this process.
Do agents have to move their book of business into HealthSherpa right away?
No. Agents can create a free HealthSherpa account and become familiar with the enrollment platform at their own pace, with no requirement to add consumer records. Records can be added at any time and do not need to be added all at once. Live and recorded agent training webinars are also available for agents who would like a guided walkthrough.
Is it hard to learn how to use HealthSherpa?
No. The HealthSherpa platform is built to be intuitive and is designed around agent workflows. Many agents begin submitting enrollments during their first session, and live onboarding support is also available.
If an agent imports consumers into HealthSherpa, does HealthSherpa own the consumer list?
No. Importing consumers into HealthSherpa does not transfer ownership of consumer relationships.
What does HealthSherpa do with consumer information?
HealthSherpa uses consumer information to support the enrollment process. HealthSherpa does not sell consumer data to third parties.
HealthSherpa handles all personally identifiable information (PII) in accordance with the EDE and Web-Broker Business Agreements with CMS.
Does HealthSherpa support enrollments for all states?
HealthSherpa supports enrollment submissions for all states that use the Federally Facilitated Marketplace (FFM). HealthSherpa also supports enrollments in Georgia, which uses a State-based Marketplace (SBM) called Georgia Access.
For all other states utilizing an SBM, agents can get a quote and shop for plans using HealthSherpa. When it's time to apply and complete an enrollment submission, HealthSherpa will direct the agent to the state's SBM website.
Does HealthSherpa display all available carriers in a consumer's area?
Plan display depends on the account type, whether the plan is on-exchange or off-exchange, and whether it is a medical or dental plan.
For on-exchange plans, HealthSherpa for Agents and Enrollee Assistance Full-Service accounts display all plans available in the consumer's ZIP code & county by default. Carrier-specific accounts display plans from a single carrier only.
