Types of HealthSherpa accounts

HealthSherpa allows licensed agents to choose between three account types when working to connect consumers to ACA coverage. Agents may have a HealthSherpa for Agents account, a HealthSherpa Enrollee Assistance Full-Service account, and a Carrier-specific HealthSherpa account.

All account types are free and also allow agents the option to create an agency account or link to an existing Agency.

While agents are allowed to create multiple HealthSherpa accounts, each account is only to be used by the agent associated with the account. Users will not be permitted to log into multiple accounts at the same time, nor may users share accounts.

HealthSherpa for Agents

HealthSherpa for Agents accounts display all available plans in a consumer's writing area, and enrollments will be processed according to the agent's carrier settings.

Agents may wish to create this type of account if they:

  • Are FFM certified or certified with another supported ACA state-based marketplace

  • Are licensed in the state where their consumers are seeking coverage

  • Prefer to collect and document consent

  • Wish to maintain responsibility for the enrollment & consumer relationship

  • Are part of an Agency who uses NPN Override

HealthSherpa Enrollee Assistance Full-Service

With a HealthSherpa Enrollee Assistance Full-Service account, agents transfer consumer relationships to HealthSherpa via a personalized phone number or enrollment link. When the consumer calls/logs in, HealthSherpa conducts a full needs analysis, manages the enrollment and the consumer relationship. HealthSherpa will pay agents for each eligible enrollment processed through the Enrollee Assistance Program (EAP). Learn more about the EAP here.

Agents may wish to create this type of account if they:

  • Are not FFM certified or certified with another supported ACA state-based marketplace

  • Are licensed, but are not licensed in the state(s) where their consumers are seeking coverage. Note: agents must be licensed in the consumer's state to receive EAP payout.

  • Prefer that HealthSherpa collects and documents consent

  • Do not not wish to have involvement with the enrollment or consumer relationship

Carrier-specific HealthSherpa account

Carrier-specific HealthSherpa accounts display plans from a single-carrier. Agents wishing to create a Carrier-specific HealthSherpa account should reach out to their carrier contacts for instruction.

If you are part of an agency and select the 'Join an existing agency' option, you will see the following page where you will input the join code for your agency.

Adding an agency join code during the account creation process

If you do not know the join code for your agency, we recommend that you check in with leadership at your company before moving on in the account creation process. It is also possible to create a solo account and add your agency's join code within the Settings page of your account later to link up with your agency.

Step 4: Input your licensed states and carrier appointments

In this step, you will list all states you are licensed within and input all of the Carriers with which you are appointed. It is very important that this is correct and updated at all times.

You can update this information at any time from the Carrier settings page of your account. Click here for directions.

Step 5: Decide if our Enrollee Assistance Program makes sense for your business

The HealthSherpa Enrollee Assistance Shared-Service Model allows you to maintain a strong relationship with your consumers throughout the year and partner with HealthSherpa to provide ACA application assistance, enrollment assistance, and ongoing support for your consumer’s ACA health plan.

If you decide to enable the Enrollee Assistance Program, you will be able to choose for which carriers you’d like to enable EAP. If the application is submitted using EAP, the application will be processed using HealthSherpa's NPN. If the application is not submitted using EAP, your NPN (or Override NPN) will be applied to any application submitted. To update EAP carrier designations, go to the Carrier Settings page of your account. Click here for directions.

HealthSherpa compensates participating agents at the time of enrollment, and additional compensation may occur when consumers stay with the plan for a defined period of time. If you decide to opt into the program, a popup detailing our Joint Marketing Agreement will appear. You may decide to enable the Enrollee Assistance Program during account creation or by visiting the Bonuses page within your account. Learn more about the Enrollee Assistance Program here.

Note: You remain responsible for complying with all applicable state insurance laws regarding licensure and appointment. The EAP may not be used to circumvent state laws that require you to be appointed with a carrier in order to discuss that carrier’s plans with a consumer.

Step 6: Enter your FFM username and NPN

All agents who want to use a HealthSherpa Agent account for ACA enrollments must be FFM certified. In this step, be sure to provide accurate information.

The NPN you share in this step will be attached to all applications you submit through HealthSherpa, so be sure to provide accurate information. If you need to change this information later, you can do so by visiting the Settings page within your account or by reaching out to our Agent Support team for assistance.

Final step in account creation process asking for FFM and NPN

If you are not FFM certified, but are certified to sell within one of the supported ACA state-based marketplace (e.g. Georgia), you should leave the FFM username field empty.

Step 7: Integrate your FFM account

CMS requires agents and brokers to integrate their FFM account in order to search the Marketplace, submit applications, or view clients. You can integrate your HealthSherpa and FFM accounts initially during account creation or you can integrate after logging in to your HealthSherpa account for the first time. Learn more here.

If you are not FFM certified, but are certified to sell within one of the supported ACA state-based marketplace (e.g. Georgia), you should select the 'Skip for now' option.

Using the same email for multiple accounts

When creating a HealthSherpa account, you will be asked for the email address you’d like to have associated with the unique account. This is the email you will use to log into the account. Many agents prefer to use a single email address.

HealthSherpa allows you to leverage the same email account across multiple HealthSherpa accounts using the “+modifier” method. The “+modifier” means that you will add a ‘+’ followed by a word of your choice before the ‘@’ symbol of your email address. For example:

You will use the respective +modifier when logging into the desired account and anytime you need to reset your password for the desired account. All emails and notifications sent to your +modifier accounts will automatically route to your original email address.

You may create as many HealthSherpa accounts as you’d like using the “+modifier” method. Note: while agents are allowed to create multiple HealthSherpa accounts, each account is only to be used by the agent associated with the account. Users will not be permitted to log into multiple accounts at the same time, nor may users share accounts.
