Consumers can choose to cancel their Marketplace coverage at any time during the year. With consent, agents can assist consumers with cancellation requests or consumers may complete cancellation request on their own.

  • Agent assisted cancellations: To cancel coverage on behalf of a consumer using HealthSherpa, Agents will log into their HealthSherpa for Agents account then select the consumer's name to open their Client's Details page. With consent, select the 'Cancel plan' button from the Plans section.

  • Consumer's wishing to cancel their own plan: To cancel coverage using HealthSherpa, Consumers will log into their HealthSherpa for Agents account. From the 'Coverage' section of their dashboard, select the 'Cancel plan' button from the Plans section.

Next, follow the prompts to submit the cancellation request. The Marketplace will process the request and provide a confirmation notice.

Cancellation requests can also be completed directly through Healthcare.gov by calling 1-800-318-2596. Consumers will need to be on the line for all cancellation requests made through Healthcare.gov, and the FFM application ID will be required.

Frequently asked questions

Are there any other tips related to cancellation?

Yes. A few other tips related to cancellation include:

  • Coverage usually ends on the last day of the month the user requests cancellation, unless a future date is chosen.

  • Be sure to specify whether coverage is ending for the whole household or only for certain individuals.

  • If a consumer wants to stop paying premiums before their plan ends, they should first confirm the cancellation has fully processed.

  • If a consumer is switching to new coverage (e.g. an employer plan) time the cancellation request so that there is not a gap between plans.

  • Consumers who were not enrolled using HealthSherpa may need to contact their insurance company’s Member Services to cancel directly with them.

Will cancelling a plan also end the auto-pay?

Auto-payments scheduled through a carrier may still need to be cancelled directly with the carrier.
