I missed my employer’s Open Enrollment to sign up for health coverage. Can I get Marketplace coverage?

No, missing your employer’s Open Enrollment window by itself does not qualify you for a Special Enrollment Period. But you may still have options through the Marketplace or other programs.

When you can enroll in a Marketplace plan

  • During Marketplace Open Enrollment (November 1 – January 15 for plan year 2026).

  • If you have another Qualifying Life Event (like losing other coverage, getting married, or moving), you can apply for Marketplace coverage outside Open Enrollment.

Please note, if you are offered affordable employer sponsored insurance you can enroll through the Marketplace, but will not be eligible for financial assistance.

Other options

  • Ask your employer if you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period through work (some allow mid-year changes if you’ve had a major life event).

  • If you lose eligibility for your employer coverage entirely (for example, you leave your job or your hours are reduced), that would qualify you for Marketplace coverage.

  • Depending on your income, you may qualify for Medicaid or CHIP, which are open year-round.
